General
Austria's social benefits, such as minimum benefits or social and pension insurance, contribute to a high level of social security for its population.
Austria's social benefits
Together with France, Italy, Spain and Germany, Austria is one of the countries that spend more than a quarter of GDP on social spending. This puts it well above the OECD average of 210.1 percent. The Austrian social security system has a complex structure involving several players at national and regional level.
It includes health, pension, accident and unemployment insurance, and the system of compulsory insurance applies to all employees. The prerequisite for this is that the remuneration is above the marginal earnings threshold (2024: € 518.44). Social security contributions are paid automatically through payroll accounting for employees. Depending on the type of employment, different social insurance institutions are responsible.
