Requirements for an ID Austria account

You must be at least 14 years of age
You must have a smartphone with the Digitales Amt (Digital Office) or an alternative suitable authentication factor
If you cannot switch online, you will need to go to a government office in person to complete registration

Registration without Austrian citizenship

The ID Austria registration of persons without Austrian citizenship is carried out at the local police stations. You have to proof that you currently have established your center of life in Austria and that you are at least 14 years old. Through an employment contract you can proof your center of life in Austria or you are currently enrolled at an Austrian university. Please bring a current passport photo and your passport or identity card (ID card) with you to your appointment at the local police station, as well as a document to substantiate your domestic connection (e.g. confirmation of registration, student ID card, confirmation from your employer, company ID card from a company in Austria, etc.).

Registering as an Austrian citizen

If you are an Austrian citizen who likes to register for an ID Austria for the first time you have 3 options:

Pre-Registration via app “Digitales Amt”
- Step 1: Install the Digitales Amt (Digital Office) app and pre-register using the online pre-registration tool.
- Step 2: Within 30 days after your pre-registration, schedule an appointment at one of the offices listed here.
  
  Take the official ID you used to pre-register, your smartphone, and a passport photograph with you.
- Step 3: Once you get there, load the TAN on your smartphone and show it to the official processing your registration.
- Step 4: When prompted, enter your signature password into the app and sign the signature
Registration via app “Digitales Amt”

Install the "Digitales Amt" app before your visit at the registration authority. Once your identity has been verified on site, you will receive an ID Austria printout with a QR code. Scan this with the "Digitales Amt" app to start the ID Austria registration process. The public authority employee will then send a TAN to your app to link it to your ID Austria. You must then complete the registration online within three months: To do this, you will need the ID Austria printout, the "Digitales Amt" app and a second device.

Registration via SMS-TAN

You visit the registration authority with an SMS-enabled cell phone. After verifying your identity on site, the authority employee will send you a TAN by SMS to start the ID Austria registration process. You will then receive an ID Austria printout, which you must use to complete the registration online within three months: You will need an internet-enabled device and a suitable authentication factor.
